Precious will remain in the Recovery Room until cleared for adoption.
Precious came to RMCR from California via New Mexico. She is 5 ½ years old and is just the happiest dog she can be. There’s never a dull moment around her. She has a ton of squeaky toys and will often focus on one or two during the day. This often involves shaking the toy violently. Once or twice, she’s whacked herself and let out a yelp.
She has great energy and always follows her foster Dad around. Often, she will have a toy in her mouth and is right at his heals making it very difficult to walk. In the evening when her foster Dad settles in to watch TV, Precious will pace back and forth near him until he picks her up and places her on the couch. She is ready to claim his lap when he sits back down. He rarely has enough time to get comfortable before she pushes her way on to him. She enjoys napping on the couch in the evening.
Precious suffers from severe bilateral Osteoarthritis and Hip Dysplasia. RMCR is committed to exploring every option for this young lady. That includes bilateral hip replacement surgery. This type of surgery is complex and requires prosthetic implants in the femur and acetabulum (socket). For people, the recovery is quite quick, but for our four-legged friends, it takes a bit longer. Some surgeons will opt to do both at the same time, others might want to stagger them.
For a dog with a condition that limits her mobility, she gets around pretty well. Her hips and knees bother her as she often will turn her head and look back at her hind legs. Her hind legs are weak and the just cannot keep up with her level of energy. Her back end will often flop down but she doesn’t much care. She picks herself up and continues on. Her foster Dad will often play hide and seek with whichever toy she is fixated on. She loves playing pull the toy with him. Believe it or not, she can pull pretty well.
She loves, loves, loves going for walks. When her foster Dad pulls out her harness, she gets very squiggly and excited and it can be challenging to get the harness on her. She can be rather impatient and will scratch at the door to get going. She pulls a bit on the leash during walks and will often react to a high energy dog when passing by.
Precious also has a couple of eye issues. They do not deter her from living a high quality of life. She is on two types of eye medication to reduce the inflammation and ocular pressure caused by glaucoma. Sadly, she has hypermature cataracts. During this phase, the lens fibers begin to breakdown through dissolution. Although it is sad, this little girl does not let her eye sight get in the way of her enjoying being who she is.
Precious is such a beautiful little soul who will make the best companion for anyone. She loves all people and has made a few dog friends. Precious is pretty attached to her foster Dad, so baby steps will be needed to transition her to her new home. Although her foster Dad loves her, he will listen to her when the time comes.
RMCR has started a blog on Precious. It can be found on our website in the link below.
