Axis is one of the recent mill dog rescues. He has done well with his foster, learning stairs, and exploring the yard. After a couple of weeks he’s definitely playful - he is getting along great with our two two big dogs and the cat. He loves to explore the backyard with them. Axis has no problem with people. He went to the groomer, he was nervous about some aspects of the process but overall he did well. He hasn’t been around any kids. His level of training is minimal. He walks on a leash but he wanders all over the place. He is doing really well with house training, stays in his crate at night or when we’re away. He learned to navigate the hardwood stairs in the first couple of days.
Axis is a little thin, weighing 17.5 pounds so we’re giving him extra food. He should be between 20 and 25 pounds. The vet thinks he might be a little older than stated because of his teeth. Axis had cherry eye in his left eye. Dogs have a third eyelid (nictitating membrane) that helps protect and lubricate the eye. This membrane has a tear-producing gland that normally stays hidden. Cherry eye happens when the gland slips out of place and becomes visible as a round, reddish-pink mass near the corner of the eye. (petMD.com). Prior to coming to RMCR his gland was removed. He will be just fine but he should have tear tests done by the vet on both eyes yearly. His tear tests are now normal.
Axis would benefit from aother dog in the home and a fenced yard where can free roam without always having to on a leash. Axis is a very sweet, curious puppy and should adjust easily to his forever home.
