Earlier this year, RMCR announced that we would be attending an adoption event at Wilmore Nursery every third Saturday of the month. As it turns out, the adoption events at Wilmore fluctuate and are not consistently every third Saturday and the schedule often conflicts with commitments we have with other events.
Consequently, we’ve agreed to extend our relationship with Petco. The Petco store at Park Meadows has invited us to be present every third Saturday of the month at their location. Our standing monthly adoption events at Petco are as follows:
First Saturday – Petco – Highlands Ranch, 1265 Sgt Jon Stiles Drive, Highlands Ranch, CO 80129, 303-346-0471
Second Saturday – Petco – Southlands, 24101 East Orchard Road Suite C, Aurora, CO 80016, 303-627-5710
Third Saturday – Petco – Park Meadows, 9425 East County Line Road, Englewood, CO 80112, 303-708-0616
We will be at each of these events from 9:00am until 4:00pm, either inside or outside depending on the weather. We invite all interested parties to stop by and visit. We also encourage previous adopters to bring their dogs for a visit so that we can catch up on how they are doing in their fabulous new lives!
In addtion to these regularly scheduled events, we will also have a second team that will attend other special events such as the Pearl Street Fair as we are invited. Please check back often to see when these additional events will be held.

On Sunday, June 13, 2010, the Old Pearl Street Association will host the 2010 Old South Pearl Street Pet Fair at the 1500 block of South Pearl Street in Denver. Rocky Mountain Cocker Rescue will once again take part in this event along with some of our most eligible Cocker Spaniels.
Please feel free to bring your pets along with you, but bear in mind that the weather in mid-June can be quite warm! If you are bringing animals, you may want to bring something to put on the pavement for them to stop and stand on, or perhaps an umbrella for shade, and don’t forget to bring plenty of water for them and for you!
We will be offering low cost micro-chipping and would love to talk to you about Cocker Spaniels and animal rescue. The event will take place from 9:00 – 1:00 between Florida and Iowa Avenues on old South Pearl Street. Be sure to stop by and say hi!

One of our volunteers has received the 2009 President’s Volunteer Service award for his work with Rocky Mountain Cocker Rescue. The President’s Volunteer Service Award is an initiative of the Corporation for National and Community Service and is administered by the Points of Light Foundation & Volunteer Center National Network.
John works for Qwest Communications. The Qwest Foundation will match volunteer hours at eligible 501(c)(3) programs with a monetary contribution. Employees must volunteer for a minimum of 40 hours in a six-month period to qualify for the program. John volunteered for an excess of 300 hours in his first six months with RMCR.
Because of his effort, he received a pin, a certificate, and a letter from President Barak Obama congratulating him for his service to the community. President Obama stated in his letter “While government can open more opportunities for us to serve our communities, it is up to each of us to seize those opportunities. Thank you for your devotion to service and for doing all you can to shape a better tomorrow for our great Nation.”
RMCR also adds their thanks to John for his work to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome eligible Cocker Spaniels. Find out more about The President’s Volunteer Service Award at http://www.presidentialserviceawards.gov/. If you are interested in volunteering with RMCR, check with your employer to see if they offer a similar program. It’s an easy way to increase your efforts and help non-profit organizations.

Rocky Mountain Cocker Rescue is pleased to announce that we will be attending regular monthly adoption events in 2010!

On the second Saturday of each month, we will be at the PETCO in Southlands. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to partner with PETCO to introduce our rescued Cocker Spaniels and to encourage folks looking for a new pet to consider adopting a rescued dog.
The folks at PETCO put their hearts into helping homeless animals. In partnership with numerous animal welfare organizations nationwide, such as county animal shelters and local humane societies, they help find homes for thousands of homeless pets every month. Additionally, each pet adopted at the PETCO event will get a coupon good for their first groom at the PETCO full-service grooming salon.
The Soutlands PETCO is located at 24101 E Orchard Road, Suite C, Aurora CO 80016. Their phone number is 303-627-5710. We will be there from 9:00 am until 3:00 pm. Keep up to date with their Store Events Calendar.

On the third Saturday of each month, we will be joining other rescue groups at Wilmore Nursery in Littleton. Wilmore Nursery is also a good friend to rescue groups and has generously invited us to be a part of their monthly rescue event.
We will be at Willmore from 9:00 am until 3:00 pm. They are located at 711 E County Line Road, Littleton CO 80122, just a couple of blocks east of Broadway. There is plenty of additional parking on Phillips Street next door to the nursery.
While you’re there, take a look at their huge selection of plants, shrubs and trees. Their helpful employees are always willing to offer their advice and experience regarding any questions you may have. Visit their website at www.wilmorenurseries.com for more information or call 303-795-5339.

December 11, 2009 is a very special day for Rocky Mountain Cocker Rescue! Little Toby was adopted this morning and he is the 100th Cocker Spaniel adopted since the organization began back on February 17, 2009.
Of course, RMCR could not have done this single-handedly. Many volunteers help rescue these special souls from animal shelters, kennels and puppy mills. They freely give of their time to transport them, sometimes from other states, often donating medical care and transportation costs to get them to us here in the Denver metro area. Others provide foster homes so that they will have comfortable, loving environments until their forever families come forward. Donations and adoption fees allow us to continue that care until they are adopted. Assistance from our special veterinary and grooming associates help us stretch those dollar even farther.
So, to those volunteers, and especially to our adoptive parents, congratulations on helping RMCR achieve this milestone! However, this is only the beginning. There are many more waiting for rescue. Please encourage your friends and families to support our efforts. We are always looking for foster families so that we do not have to turn down requests to save these animals.
If you can’t foster, there are other ways to volunteer. Please see our Volunteer page for more information. We also welcome donations of cash, food, and supplies. Remember that we are a 501(c)(3) non-profit, charitable organization, so your donations are tax-deductible. With your assistance, we will be here to help many hundreds more.

Rocky Mountain Cocker Rescue is pleased to be part of this years “Holiday Gifts For Pets and Their People” event at Tagawa Gardens on November 7-8, 2009 from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.
“Holiday Gifts For Pets and Their People” is a holiday craft event for and about pets and their people. It emphasizes hand-made crafts (no imports here!) and animal-related and themed activities. The event is ultimately a fundraiser for animal rescue organizations in the Colorado area.
The event is set up in a community participation, donation and volunteer format to allow most of the funds collected to go directly to animals in need. Through the support, generosity and dedication to the community and its animals, Chris Collins and Tagawa Gardens continue to be the driving forces behind this ever-growing annual event. Of course the event would not exist without the hard work and dedication of its many participants.
“Holiday Gifts For Pets and Their People”TM is a fun, public, pets-welcome event in which a variety of people and groups work together for the benefit of animals in need in the Colorado area through hand-made artisan/craft sales and animal related and themed activities.
The event celebrates and honors animals as our pets and our partners, as well as provides a venue to raise funds for smaller, less-publicized Colorado non-profit animal organizations that actively and positively support and promote the well being of animals.
Well-behaved pets are always welcome on leashes or in carriers (at their owner’s risk). At least 10% and up to 100% of every dollar you spend at the event benefits Colorado animal rescue groups directly. No amount is taken out for advertising, administration or booth rentals. The organization, preparation and venue for the event are all donated on behalf of the animals.
For more information including maps and directions, please visit http://www.holidaygifts4pets.com/. Tagawa Gardens is located on Parker Road, just south of Broncos Parkway. Look for the sign that says “Tagawa Gardens Turn Here”!

For Christmas this year, why not give your fur baby a new cozy bed and help an animal in rescue at the same time?
The patent pending “Amanda’s Gift” beds come in 5 sizes: X-Small (12-16″) for the cavy and ferret folks priced at $10.00, Small (22″) priced at $20.00, Medium (24-26″) priced at $30.00, Large (32″) priced at $40.00, and X-Large (40″) priced at $55.00 (Prices will be going up January 1, 2010.). These beds are for INDOOR use only. These beds have covers for those animals that like to snuggle under something soft and warm. The outside of the beds vary in fabric and the inside cover and “sleep on” part is fleece.
JBs Legacy knows that some animals come with absolutely nothing when they go into a shelter or rescue. Especially the dogs and cats from the mills. While they usually come with “mental baggage” and issues that need to be worked through, these poor unfortunate, unloved fur babies never had anything of their very own.
With this said, JBs Legacy started the Amanda’s Gift program. They hand make a crate pad/kennel pad/blanket for animals in rescue. These little “comforters” will help ease the transition to their new temporary home while they wait for adoption. Each animal will have his/her very own little gift from Amanda and you that will be a soft, fuzzy place to call their own. For each bed purchased from JB’s Legacy, a kennel blanket will be donated to a homeless, rescued animal.
For more information, contact JBs Legacy at JBsLegacy@aol.com or by calling 970-231-1024. Or better yet, visit them on November 7th and 8th at the “Holiday Gifts For Pets and Their People” event at Tagawa Gardens on Parker Road, just south of Broncos Parkway. Look for the sign that says “Tagawa Gardens Turn Here”!

Many owner-surrendered pets come into rescue because their parents have to move due to job changes or economic situations. Many apartment units do not accept pets and their owners have no choice but to find other homes for their beloved furry kids. But now there is help!
Kate Reardon has created a web site after searching for an apartment that would accept her Jack Russell Daisy, and her Beagle Jerry. As a pet owner, she found it difficult to find pet friendly apartments and wanted to help other pet owners find a home quick and easy.
The web site also promotes “Adoption”. A lot of times when people are moving to a new home, they have a new furry friend in mind. They may even be searching for pet friendly apartments with the plan of getting a pet soon. This site actively promotes adopting instead of the local puppy store.
You can view their site at http://www.myapartmentmap.com.

This year, one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. For many, their pets become co-survivors, helping them cope. But did you know cancer is the number one killer of our canine companions? One in four dogs overall – and half of all dogs age 10 and older – will die of cancer.
Born from the desire to celebrate survivors of both canine and breast cancer, cherish the memories of those we have lost, and honor the spectacular therapeutic power of the human/ animal bond, K-9s Against Cancer (formerly called K-9s for the Cure) is an annual dog-friendly 5K fun run/1 mile walk. This family-oriented day of festivities will feature music, food, games, giveaways, demonstrations and more! Net proceeds will be split equally among three great causes: Susan G.Komen Foundation -Denver, CSU’s Animal Cancer Center and The Bow Wow Buddies Foundation. Funds raised will support local breast cancer research and education efforts, canine cancer research and treatment at CSU, and local and national animal welfare programs.
Join Rocky Mountain Cocker Rescue on Saturday, October 10, 2009 (rain or shine) at Stapleton’s Central Park near MLK Boulevard and Beeler Street to help in this worthy cause for both women and pets. We will have a booth on site and will be joined by some of our adoptable dogs. Stop by and meet these little wiggle-buts!
Race participants can register at www.bowwowbuddies.com. Each participant receives a FREE race t-shirt for themselves, and a FREE bandana, 24oz portable bowl and designer leash bag for their pup! Create a personal fundraising page to collect pledges – top fundraisers will receive great prizes!
The Bow Wow Boulevard Expo Area open is open from 8:00a.m. until 12:00p.m. Check the registration site for race times. See you there!

This is the second of three articles by Stanley Popovich that we will be adding to our site:
There are many advantages to adopting a dog or cat. Adopting a pet can be a great way to reduce our every day stresses and anxieties. In addition, there are many other reasons why adopting a dog or cat can be important in your life.
For instance, pets can help us to relax and help us to focus on the good things in our lives. This can be very helpful when we are overwhelmed by the stresses and anxieties of our lives. Playing with our pets can help reduce our fears and anxieties in any situation.
Pets can get our minds off of our problems. A person could do an activity with their pet or other animals that will give them a fresh perspective on things. Spending time with animals will get your mind off of the problem and give you the energy to do other things. Most importantly, playing with animals will give you the self-confidence that you can cope and that you can get through a stressful day.
Spending time with a pet can reduce loneliness and can be a great source of companionship. A pet can help us to feel better. Also many people talk to their pets and this can help us to get their problems out in the open. Animals can be of good company to all of us and can prevent the fear of being alone during our troubles.
Taking care of dog or cat can be a great way to increase our happiness and self-confidence. There are many animals out there who could benefit from your time and talents. Doing something that will help your pet or other animals can give you a source of pride and accomplishment.
Pets are 100 percent faithful and will be by your side through the good and bad times. Everybody deals with anxieties, stresses and other life problems, and it is during those times when you need someone by your side to talk too. People in our lives come and go, but your pet will never leave you regardless how bad your problems may be.
There are also many different breeds of dogs and cats we can choose from which can accommodate our life styles. If you want a certain type of pet that will suite your life style, all you have to do is talk to a pet expert or a veterinarian. These people will work with you to determine what type of dog to get that will fit in with your household.
By adopting a pet, you will be saving a life; a life of an animal that could very well become your best friend. A pet will love you unconditionally during his or her lifetime. Don’t let a few obstacles prevent you from gaining a faithful companion in your life. Adopting a pet can be beneficial to your health and be one of the best things that you can do in your life.
